Well it’s 20 years since British Cycling Yorkshire Region stepped out on its journey of delivering a British Cycling National Road Series Event each year and for 19 of those years the event was North Yorkshire based as the Ryedale Grand Prix. For our 20th year we have made the big switch to South Yorkshire and the magnificent Wentworth Woodhouse. This Grade 1 Listed Georgian Stately home has the longest frontage of any home in Europe and offers panoramic views for spectators, with the race passing through the grounds with each lap. The house is owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, who are committed to its restoration and who welcome the public to view the project so far.
Parts of the course takes in roads which might be familiar to those who in the past have been involved with the Danum Trophy, when it was held in the area, the big change however is in the 4km stretch of private road that passes through the Wentworth Woodhouse Estate. The course doesn’t feature any major climbs but the roads are grippy in parts with lots of opportunities for breaks to establish.
As normal for our event it will operate under a Section 16A Temporary Road Closure with junctions managed by Community Traffic Management Limited working in conjunction with our volunteer marshals. Out on the road the convoy will be guided by South Yorkshire Police working alongside British Cycling’s national escort Group.
We are delighted to begin our new partnership with Rotherham Borough Council, who have been enthusiastic in supporting the establishment of the event and we look forward to a long and hopefully successful partnership with them.
With Rotherham, Barnsley and Sheffield on the doorstep, there is no shortage of overnight accommodation and with lots of local attractions on hand why not make a weekend of your visit to Wentworth.
As with any event the commitment of our volunteers is vital to them being able to take place, and with big events such as this we are indebted to the Team Yorkshire volunteers who I’m proud to head up for this event.
